(1) Where is Love Canal and what happened there related to hazardous waste?
Love Canal is near Niagara Falls, New York. It was originally going to be a canal connecting lakes Ontario and Erie, but it was never completed. The Hooker Chemical Company, located west of the canal, decided to make it a dumping ground for the chemical by-products created during their manufacturing process. Eventually, the canal was filled with waste, and when it was the company covered it and sold it to the Niagara Falls city school board for $1.00, who used it to build a school and subdivision of homes right on top of the waste. In 1977, the chemicals were detected to be leaking out and there were a number of health problems reported. In the end, the residents were evacuated and it became a ghost town.

(2) Who is Lois Gibbs and what did she do related to Love Canal?
Lois Gibbs is a mother of a child who went to the school built on the Love Canal. When she found out that it was a hazardous place, she decided to find out more about it, and to try to get her son out of there In doing so, she organized the members of the community and brought attention to the chemical problem at Love Canal. Because of her concerns, a lot more was found out about the problems the chemical waste was creating. Her work eventually helped to lay the basis for new legislative models for dealing with Environmental catastrophes.
